Drone Technology Proves Beneficial to Emergency Response

UMKC associate professor of civil engineering ZhiQiang Chen and his team have developed drone technology that can assist emergency responders in assessing damage and safety concerns in real-time. Chen tested this technology with a group of local registered drone pilots, first responders, and emergency officials the day of the August 2017 eclipse by using the drones that flew along a busy highway, monitoring traffic from Kansas City to St. Joseph, MO. Chen’s drone technology could provide early and virtual access to disaster and emergency sites, allowing for even quicker response time and assessment. This project was funded in part by a MU Extension Seed-Capital Grant. You may access the full article, here.
